In order to mature, an 11 year old girl is honest with God and the reader about her concerns, desires, and paradoxes. Preteen Margaret experienced universal issues like peer pressure, crushes, menstruation, and faith, and Blume treated them seriously without belittling her protagonist’s immature errors or livening up the story with, say, a phoney twist or a Nancy Drew-style mystery. Kelly Fremon Craig, who also wrote and directed the film, is hesitant to accurately capture Margaret’s witty, imperfect, and all too true character.
