The events of The Last Kingdom, the drama series based on Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Tales novels, come to an end in the historical epic The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die. The majority of the historical epic takes place in England, which was recognised as England informally for centuries before Great Britain even aspired to become a country. Several lesser kingdoms, including Northumbria, Mercia, and East Anglia, are seen preparing for a power struggle at the beginning of the film. This war is made worse by the recent death of Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, and the Danes’ secret attempts to incite uprising. It plays similarly to Game of Thrones, but has fewer dragons and more history.
