After being released from prison, Inez rescues her 6-year-old son Terry
from the streets of New York, gives him bogus identification, and then
reunites him with her partner Lucky. From 1994 until 2005, the story
follows Terry as he matures in Harlem. The other representations of
Terry come from 17-year-old Josiah Cross and 13-year-old Aven Courtney.
Although she is not an awful mother, she is not a good example either.
Despite her poverty, she yet works hard to protect her son, provide his
wants, and feed him.
